Viral Video Of ‘Deadly Worm’ In Capsicum Debunked As Misleading

A viral video circulating on social media claims to show a deadly worm inside capsicum, alleging that ingesting the worm could be fatal. However, these claims are inaccurate. The video, shared by an X user, features a person slicing a capsicum and removing a thin, thread-like worm. The video claims it is a threadworm that, if ingested, could feed on the large intestine and potentially cause death.

Fact Check

A quick search reveals multiple similar videos have been shared on social media, with some claiming the worm is a tiny snake. However, a report by AFP debunked these claims, stating the worm shown in the video is harmless and poses no health risk to humans.

Expert Analysis

Maria Achinelly, a doctor of natural sciences and member of the Argentinian Parasitology Association, explained to AFP that the worm appears to be a nematomorpha or a nematoda of the Mermithidae family. These worms are parasites that depend on insects and are not dangerous to humans.

“Regardless of which type of worm this is, the biology is similar — they are parasites that depend on insects and kill those that carry them. They can parasitize cockroaches, lobsters, spiders, and scorpions, but never animals like birds, reptiles, amphibians, or humans. They are not dangerous to touch or ingest,” Achinelly stated.

Conclusion

The viral video showing a worm inside a capsicum is being shared with misleading claims. The worm is harmless and does not pose any risk to human health.
