US Woman Scammed In Jaipur: Buys Fake Jewellery Worth ₹6 Crore

A US woman fell victim to a scam involving fake jewellery in Rajasthan’s Jaipur, where she was duped into purchasing artificial ornaments worth ₹6 crore from a local shop owner. Cherish, a US citizen, initially bought the silver jewellery with gold polish for just ₹300 at a shop in Johri Bazaar.

However, when the jewellery was exhibited in the US in April, it was discovered to be counterfeit. Subsequently, US woman Cherish traveled to India to confront the shop owner, Gaurav Soni, who dismissed her claims. Unsatisfied, Cherish filed a police complaint in Jaipur and sought assistance from the US embassy, prompting an investigation by local authorities.

According to the victim’s statement to the police, she had connected with Gaurav Soni via Instagram in 2022, ultimately spending ₹6 crore on fake ornaments over the following two years. Gaurav and his father, Rajendra Soni, are currently evading arrest, with police forming special teams to locate them.

The case highlights the dangers of online transactions and the importance of thorough verification when making purchases, especially from unfamiliar sources. Authorities are urging caution and advising individuals to verify the authenticity of sellers before engaging in transactions.
