UPSC Aspirant Dowry Complaint ‘Isse Badhiya Kuch Mat Dete’, Bride’s Family Calls Off Marriage!

A family called off their daughter’s wedding after the groom, who was a UPSC aspirant went on a rant about the quality of furniture he received as a wedding gift. The incident came to light after the bride’s cousin shared screenshots of the groom’s messages on Reddit, sparking widespread discussion online.

What Led to the Controversy?

According to the Reddit post, the bride’s family had voluntarily sent several pieces of furniture—including a bed, new mattresses, and a sofa set—to the groom’s home ahead of the wedding. However, instead of expressing gratitude, the groom lashed out at his fiancée, criticising the furniture and implying it was not up to his standards.

The groom, reportedly a UPSC aspirant and a teacher, sent a series of rude texts to the bride-to-be. In one of the messages, he sarcastically questioned, “Ye saman kya soch kar bheja tha? Aur kiske level ke according bheja hai? (What were you thinking when you sent this? And according to whose level did you choose it?)”

When the bride asked what was wrong with the furniture, he responded that it would have been better if nothing had been sent at all. “Isse badhiya kuch mat dete. Main khud le leta sab apne according. Ab ye jagah bhi gherega aur kisi ko dikhane layak bhi nahi hai. (It would have been better if you sent nothing. I would have bought everything myself. Now this is just taking up space and isn’t even worth showing to anyone),” he ranted.

Wedding Called Off

Following this heated exchange, the bride’s family decided to cancel the wedding just ten days before the scheduled ceremony. While the groom’s family had not made any official dowry demands, his reaction to the gift was enough for the bride’s relatives to call off the marriage.

After the news broke, social media users largely supported the bride’s decision. One Reddit user commented, “Good riddance! She deserves better.” Another wrote, “If she has a government job, she should not marry someone who cries over gifts and status.”

The incident has reignited discussions on the expectations placed on brides’ families regarding wedding gifts and dowry, with many applauding the bride’s family for standing their groun
