Unmarked Speed Breaker In Dehradun: 7 Accidents In 15 Minutes

An unmarked speed breaker close to the Clock Tower of the Smart City in Dehradun has created concern regarding safety as it caused accidents one after another within a small span of time. A video went viral on social media which showed vehicles including cars and bikes hitting the speed breaker at high speed and turning airborne and landing on their head, thus creating commotion and injuries.

The poorly marked and unplanned speed bump is barely visible to motorists, which leads to dangerous jumps and crashes. Footage from the site depicts vehicles landing with severe impact and one scooter crashing sideways, thereby throwing the rider off. Some passersby rushed to the injured persons, showing that the situation was urgent.

Reports say that in 15 minutes, the speed breaker caused seven accidents, one of which involved a child getting injuries. Inhabitants have condemned the negligence, stating that the unmarked speed bump is responsible for the daily accidents in the locality.

Political and Public Outrage

Congress spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni took to social media to condemn the negligence. The government aimed to improve road safety by constructing speed breakers and zebra crossings, but the lack of planning has turned them into dangerous obstacles,” she stated on X.

Social media users were also frustrated. One user questioned the lack of proper markings, saying, Are these speed breakers installed to slow down vehicles or to crash them?” Another user added, Why couldnt these speed breakers be painted in visible colours like yellow or red to alert drivers?”

Calls for Accountability

The incident has raised serious questions about road safety measures in Dehradun. Local authorities are being urged to take immediate corrective action, such as painting the speed breakers in bright colors and installing warning signs to prevent further accidents.

As videos of the accidents continue going viral, it is another stark reminder that proper planning and proper implementation of road safety measures can be paramount. Till such corrective measures are in place, it remains a hazard to unsuspecting motorists till corrective measures come into effect.
