Tension gripped parts of the city on Saturday evening after stone-pelting disrupted a Hanuman Jayanti procession, triggering panic and a subsequent protest by locals.

The procession, which began at Shah Ke Kolhupura, had reached near Colonelganj Masjid around 8 PM when a confrontation reportedly broke out between a local corporator and some individuals. The dispute escalated quickly, and stones were hurled at the procession, prompting participants to flee the area in fear.

Police personnel deployed at the site intervened promptly, dispersing the crowd and attempting to restore order.

In response to the incident, residents staged a chakka-jam (road blockade), demanding that those responsible for the stone-pelting be identified and a case registered against them. Senior district officials, including Collector Kishore Kumar Kanyal and Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Sinha, reached Hanuman Chouraha to pacify the protesters.

The officials advised the agitated locals to head to Kotwali police station to file a formal complaint. Protesters agreed, and the blockade was lifted.

Later, both the Collector and the SP visited Colonelganj to assess the situation on the ground.

SP Sanjeev Kumar Sinha assured the public, saying, “The situation is now under control. After reports of stone pelting on the procession near Colonelganj Masjid, there was a minor disturbance, but the police and administration acted swiftly and brought the situation under control.”

Authorities have confirmed that additional forces have been deployed in sensitive areas to prevent further unrest.
