A surreal scene unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district on Thursday, May 15, when hundreds of ₹500 notes were seen flying across a busy highway. Witnesses described the moment as a “rain of money,” with bystanders and commuters scrambling to collect the loose cash, even putting themselves in harm’s way amidst moving vehicles.
The unusual sight triggered chaos and panic, forcing authorities to intervene. A video from the scene has since gone viral, showing dozens of people running around, picking up currency notes, and dodging traffic in the process.
Businessman Claims Theft of Lakhs from Bus Stop
According to the police, the incident is linked to a businessman named Bhavesh, who was traveling from Varanasi to Delhi in a luxury bus. The commotion reportedly began after Bhavesh stopped at a roadside dhaba for a meal. During his break, unidentified individuals allegedly fled with a bag he was carrying — one that he claimed contained ₹8 to ₹10 lakh in cash.

“About one and a half lakh rupees were seen scattered across the highway,” a Kokhraj police official confirmed, adding that the investigation is underway to determine whether this was a premeditated theft or the result of carelessness.
Police Launch Probe, CCTV Footage Under Review
Soon after the money spill, police reached the scene and launched an inquiry. “We are yet to confirm whether this was a case of robbery or simply a case of money falling due to negligence,” officials stated, as quoted by NDTV India. CCTV footage from the dhaba and nearby locations is currently under review to piece together what exactly transpired.
The incident has not only left people stunned but has also sparked debates on safety, negligence, and the public’s desperation around money.
