Parents are commonly described as the most loving guardians of their kids. But when they become cruel, their kids remain with no one in the world whom they can trust. One such sad case has come from Poland, in which a woman was held locked in her childhood bedroom for 27 years by her own parents.
Mirella, aged 42, was allegedly locked up by her parents when she was just 15 years old. In 1998, her parents reported her missing, leading her neighbors to believe that she had run away.
In the village of Swietochlowice, southern Poland, the story broke out in July but made headlines nationally at present as villagers undertook a fund-raising to cover the cost of her treatment. Mirella was suffering from a severe infection when she was found by the police and was just a few days from death. For two months she had been bedridden in the hospital with various ailments caused by chronic neglect.
When strange noises were heard from the house by residents, they informed authorities. Mirella's eighty-two-year-old mother explained to police that all was normal. But when officials noticed Mirella's legs were gravely injured, they called for emergency medical care immediately. The physicians were shocked and pronounced her to be "days away from death."
Mirella "has never been to the doctor, never had identification, never gone for a walk, or even stepped onto the balcony," as per tragic details revealed by the fundraiser organizers. Witnesses said her legs appeared to be necrotic, which points to serious neglect, and that her hair and teeth were severely disfigured.
The parents have been charged with a criminal case by the government. There were serious allegations of abuse by the parents following the incident.
