There are no holes in the road; there's a road in the holes." This irritable saying makes its reappearance all over India during the monsoon season, but what starts off as black humor too often ends in tragedy. Potholes kill, destroy cars, and are a financial burden for tens of millions of citizens navigating India's roads. At least 19 accidents and six fatalities take place every day because of potholes, the fatality rate increasing from 0.27 in 2013 to 0.42 in 2022, reports Factly.in.
This year, the monsoon worsened the crisis, causing havoc in Punjab, Jammu, and Uttarakhand, and resulting in widespread waterlogging throughout the nation. Continuous road and highway construction work has also increased the risk for drivers. The risks became all too real when a car recently plunged into a water-filled pothole.

This accident took place in Patna, Bihar, on Friday night (September 19). A five-passenger black Scorpio-N SUV fell into a very deep, water-filled pothole close to the New Market. The wheels and underside of the car were covered with mud, circled by rainwater, while dozens of locals stood on the edge of the damaged stretch. The uneven, cracked surface along the crater emphasized the region's lack of road repairs.
The owner of the car, Nitu Singh Choubey, said that the accident could have proved to be fatal. "Everyone has been approached. We met the DM. This is a conspiracy to tarnish the image of the government during election time. This is all BUIDCO's mistake. They dug a pothole in the road and let it be there for 20 days. It's rainy season." 5 individuals ended up in it. If a person had lost their life, then who is responsible? " according to an ANI video.
She also alleged that no safety measures had been put in place to warn commuters.
"There was no barricade. Even after my car plunged in, another individual plunged off his bike into the same pothole. Locals claim someone or other plunges into this pothole daily," she added.
Rescued Passengers, No One Injured As per updates, all the passengers were rescued safely and were found to be unaffected. The Scorpio-N, with its robust construction and crash integrity, managed to take the hit even after turning over and coming to rest on its side in the pothole. The cabin and pillars of the SUV seemed to be intact.
