A 30-year-old Indian male was stabbed to death by another Indian male while commuting in a public bus in Austin, Texas, police announced on Tuesday.
Details of the Incident
Austin Police Department (APD) reported that the incident occurred on the night of May 14, said news agency PTI. The police and emergency responders received a report call of a person shot or stabbed on a bus and responded immediately to the scene. However, they were only able to find the body of the deceased, Akshay Gupta, with trauma marks.
The officials explained that they did try to administer emergency life-saving attempts, but Gupta died on the scene. The suspect was a 31-year-old Indian male, Deepak Kandel.
Preliminary inquiry has shown that the suspect sat beside Gupta on the bus when he allegedly stabbed the victim in the neck without remorse. Kandel was also said to have alighted from the bus in a “calm” state of mind with other passengers. The accused, Kandel, was located and detained by Austin police within a short time, and he confessed to stabbing Gupta as he “resembled his uncle.” He was booked into the Travis County Jail and has been charged with 1st Degree Murder.
Indian Citizens Attacked Abroad
As per the Indian government, eighty-six Indian citizens were attacked or killed in other nations during 2023. Last December, Minister of state for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh told Parliament that of the 86 Indian citizens attacked or killed during 2023, 12 were in the United States, and 10 each were in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia.
“The safety and security of Indians abroad is one of the foremost priorities for the government of India. Our missions and posts remain vigilant and closely monitor any untoward incident. Such incidents are immediately taken up with the concerned authorities of the host country to ensure that the cases are properly investigated and the perpetrators are punished,” said Kirti Vardhan Singh.
