A routine courtroom hearing turned into a scene of chaos when family members of a 23-year-old murder victim physically attacked the suspect during proceedings at the Bernalillo County District Court in Albuquerque. The dramatic incident unfolded nearly a year after Alexander Ortiz was arrested for the alleged murder of his ex-girlfriend, Alianna Farfan.
Family Members Break Courtroom Protocol
The tension in the courtroom reached a boiling point when Carlos Lucero, the victim’s uncle, leapt over the courtroom partition and charged at Ortiz. Video footage captured Lucero and another man, identified as Pete Ysasi, aggressively approaching Ortiz after initially attacking an unidentified individual wearing jeans and a dark long-sleeved shirt.
Ortiz, visibly shaken, was shielded by a corrections officer who attempted to intervene amid the growing commotion.

Court Officer Draws Taser to End Brawl
As the situation escalated, the corrections officer found himself under attack while trying to protect Ortiz. Reports indicate the officer was “battered” during the altercation. The fight eventually subsided when the officer drew his Taser, dispersing the crowd and regaining control of the courtroom.
Adding to the chaos, suspect Alexander Ortiz’s father, Joeray Ortiz, was seen joining the fray, reportedly attempting to break up the fight rather than escalate it. Amid the scuffle, Lucero was overheard shouting, “He killed my niece like a coward,” highlighting the deep emotional strain underlying the violent outburst.
Aftermath and Legal Consequences
Following the incident, both Lucero and Ysasi were taken into custody but were later released from the Metropolitan Detention Center. The courtroom brawl has sparked discussions about security measures during emotionally charged trials, particularly in cases involving violent crimes.
