In yet another shocking incident of phone theft, a CCTV video captured a thief stealing a conductor’s phone inside a moving bus. The video, which has now gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), shows the conductor deeply engaged in a conversation with a passenger. Standing just behind him, a young boy patiently waits for the bus to halt. Rising Phone Thefts Across Indian Metros

Phone snatching and theft have become alarmingly frequent in metropolitan areas such as Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Transit spaces like buses, metros, and trains have become hotspots for such crimes.

According to police records, Delhi alone reported 4,749 phone snatching cases in 2024, with only 1,572 devices recovered. In comparison, 5,873 phones were stolen in 2023 and 1,776 were retrieved. The recovery numbers were even lower in 2022 and 2021.

Not an Isolated Incident

Earlier in April, a similar incident took a dangerous turn inside a moving train. A thief attempted to steal a passenger’s phone but was caught in the act. The victim grabbed the thief’s arm and forced him to cling onto the train window while continuously hitting him. The video from that incident also went viral, stirring public outrage and laughter in equal measure.

As urban thefts grow more daring and common, authorities and commuters alike are raising concerns over safety and surveillance in public transportation systems.
