Kempty Fall Overflows After Torrential Rains Lash Uttarakhand; IMD Issues Fresh Alerts for North India | Watch

Heavy rains over the weekend caused a spate in Mussoorie’s favorite tourist spot, Kempty Fall, to become a swollen and mighty torrent. The horrifyingly visual scenes of the waterfall cascading in full spate have gone viral on social media, causing concern for public safety and tourism.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that parts of Uttarakhand, such as Nainital, experienced uninterrupted rains last week. The rain saw a steep decline in temperatures, prompting tourists to postpone or revise their plans and stay indoors for safety.

Students too suffered at the hands of the inclement weather. Travel was also made tough by the rain, which caused waterlogging and traffic jams on most hilly routes.

Debris Falls Into Waterfall as Rains Intensify

Adding to the alarm, huge amounts of debris and rocks began falling into Kempty Fall from the surrounding hills. The strong water flow increased the effect of falling debris, and the terrain became highly dangerous.

Photos posted by visitors and locals on social media depict the sheer spout of water inundating the surrounding area. The increase in water level and debris flow has rendered reaching the waterfall hazardous, prompting the authorities to closely watch the development.

Weather Forecast for North India: More Rain, Thunderstorms Ahead

Previously, the IMD forecast isolated scattered rain over northern states between May 1 and May 6. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan can expect thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40–60 km/h.

A wider alert was also sounded for Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. They might experience scattered light to moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms during the same time.

Uttarakhand specifically is likely to experience isolated hailstorms on May 1 and 3, with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 50–60 km/h on May 3.

Delhi Weather Update: Thunderstorms Likely

Meanwhile, Delhi’s minimum temperature on Monday was 23.2°C, 1.5°C lower than the season average. Humidity was at 63% at 8:30 AM.

The IMD says “Thunderstorm with rain are likely in the national capital today.” Delhi’s day’s maximum temperature could reach 34°C. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 137, making it “moderate”.
