Where justice was anticipated, scenes of celebration left citizens outraged. In a shocking incident from Karnataka’s Haveri district, five of the seven accused in a 2024 gang-rape case were granted bail and then took to the streets in a celebratory procession. The video of the roadshow, which quickly went viral, drew heavy criticism from the public and forced the police to take swift action.
Roadshow Sparks Anger and Re-Arrest
According to reports, the accused staged a roadshow between Haveri sub-jail and Akki Aloor town, involving a convoy of five vehicles and over 20 supporters. The five main accused, Aftab Chandanakatti, Madar Saab Mandakki, Samivulla Lalnavar, Mohammed Sadiq, and Shoaib Mulla were seen parading on the city’s main roads in what resembled a “victory procession.”

Following public outrage and social media backlash, the police re-arrested the five accused. Authorities stated that such actions undermine the judicial process and could incite communal and social tension.
How the Incident Unfolded
The case dates back to January 2024, when a woman in an interfaith relationship was staying with her partner at a hotel. According to her complaint, the accused stormed into the premises, forcibly abducted her, assaulted her, and later dumped her near a lodge.
Weak Identification Led to Bail
Due to the victim’s inability to clearly identify the accused in court, the Haveri Sessions Court granted them bail. However, the act of celebrating bail like a public triumph has raised serious concerns about respect for the rule of law.
Repeat Offenders and New Evidence
Investigations revealed that some of the accused were previously involved in violence and moral policing cases. A new video has emerged showing scenes of the victim’s abduction and assault. Although no official complaint has been filed regarding this footage, police are actively reviewing it and may proceed with suo motu action.
