Vice President Kamala Harris is campaigning for a second term as President of the United States, facing off against former President Donald Trump. As she garners significant support from friends and family, a recent viral video has drawn attention to the correct pronunciation of her name.
In the video, actor Kerry Washington addressed the audience about any confusion regarding Harris’s name. “Some folks struggle, or pretend to struggle, with pronouncing our future president’s name. Confusion is understandable. Disrespect is not!” Washington said.
She then introduced Harris’s great-nieces, Amara and Leela, daughters of Harris’s niece Meena Harris, to demonstrate the pronunciation. Amara explained, “First you say ‘Kama,’ like a comma in a sentence,” while Leela added, “Then you say ‘La,’ like ‘la-la-la-la-la.’”
