The Gurugram pollution disaster has gone into overdrive after several major fires at Bandhwari dumpsite and within the Aravali forest. The crisis attained new levels of public indignation after a revolting clip from the city was shared extensively on social media. The footage, taken by someone in a high-rise complex in Sector 58, caught the city shrouded by heavy clouds of smoke from combustible waste. It was posted by a media practitioner, who said the atmosphere was one of ‘hill station vibes’.

The clip became viral within no time, and reactions poured in. Some doubted local authorities, while others were worried about the health hazards such extreme pollution could pose. Times Now was not able to establish the date, location, or originality of the clip.

By way of background, two huge blazes broke out in the Aravali hills on April 26, preceded by a fire at the Bandhwari dump on the same day. In the video, the caption is: “Another good morning from kudagram #Gurgaon #Gurugram. That’s Sector 58 for you. The millennium city gives a hill station feel as the clouds of waste fires engulf the place. That’s what we live in and what we breathe as burning is the preferred mode of #WasteManagement here. RIP #AQI @CAQM_Official @CPCB_OFFICIAL #AirQuality #pollution #waste.”

Posted by the handle ‘sumedhasharma86’ on X (formerly Twitter), the video gained more than 143,000 views within two days. The video has caused widespread anger among locals, with many taking to social media to express their frustration with the continued pollution.

Here are the Reactions:

One user expressed their dismay: “But people are still adamant & buying costly houses from their hard earned money in fomo, thinking that it will all get ok, one fine day, least knowing our lives are limited to hope for a hope, which looks like a hope for a very very long time!!!!”

Another user commented, “Another morning choking on smoke in Sector 58 Gurgaon. We’ve turned the Millennium City into a gas chamber. This isn’t fog—it’s the toxic cloud of open waste fires. Welcome to the hill station vibes of burning garbage. WasteManagement on paper only.”

A third user posted a personal anecdote: “Morning Whatsapp Messages: My cook was reporting it began at 1:30 am at night. He could not breathe and he smelt like burning plastic.”. It’s from the Ghata Gaon side.”

Another user pointed out the absence of government accountability, saying, “The good thing is that however much you scream, nobody will hear you. All the officers live in a settlement with each other. Nobody cares.”

While this problem keeps on being talked about, the current pollution epidemic in Gurugram continues to be a serious cause for worry.
