Ganesh Visarjan: The Final Ritual

Ganesh Visarjan, observed on the final day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, is also known as Anant Chaturdashi. The word ‘visarjan’ translates to ‘immersion,’ and this sacred ritual involves immersing the idol of Lord Ganesha in water bodies such as rivers, seas, or lakes. The festival begins with the installation of Ganesha idols in homes and public places, followed by processions on the last day, where the idols are carried for immersion.

This act symbolizes Lord Ganesha’s return to Mount Kailash, where he resides with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Immersing the idol also represents the cycle of life and the return to nature, as the clay idol dissolves and blends back into the natural elements from which it was made.

Devotees choose to keep the Ganesha idol for varying periods—some for one-and-a-half days, others for five or seven days, while many observe the full ten days of the festival, concluding with the Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi.
