Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: The Story Behind The Tradition Of Ganesh Visarjan

Ganesh Chaturthi 2024, a major festival in India, especially in Maharashtra, celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. The festival spans ten days and features the installation of intricately crafted Ganesha idols in homes and public areas. It concludes with Ganesh Visarjan, a grand procession where the idols are immersed in water bodies.

Where It All Started?

Ganesh Visarjan, held on the final day of the festival, is also known as Anant Chaturdashi. The term ‘visarjan’ means immersion, and this ritual involves immersing Lord Ganesha’s idol in a river, sea, or another water body. The festival begins with the placement of Ganesha idols in homes and public spaces and ends with processions that carry the idols for immersion.

This ritual symbolizes Lord Ganesha’s return to Mount Kailash, his divine abode with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Immersing the idol represents the idea of returning to nature, with the earth-made figure dissolving and merging back into the elements.

Devotees may keep the Ganesha idol for one-and-a-half days, five days, seven days, or the full ten days before the festival concludes with Anant Chaturdashi.

The Tradition Of Ganesh Visarjan

The tradition of Ganesh Visarjan was popularized in the 19th century by Lokmanya Tilak, a freedom fighter and social reformer. Tilak used the festival to foster nationalism and unity against British rule, encouraging large public displays of Ganesha idols and organizing cultural and educational events around the festival. This approach helped build a sense of community and purpose.

Today, Ganesh Visarjan has evolved into a grand celebration, particularly in cities like Mumbai and Pune. The processions are lively, featuring music, dance, and chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya,” creating an energetic and vibrant atmosphere. People from all backgrounds join in these processions, carrying the idols to water bodies for immersion.

The echoes of “Ganpati Bappa Morya” signal the farewell to Lord Ganesha, with the anticipation of his return next year.
