Abhijit Chakraborty, founder of Alphanumero, has implemented a new policy that gives employees two additional days off each year: one for their birthday and another to celebrate a close loved one’s birthday.
This initiative comes amid growing discussions about toxic workplaces and unnecessary stress, representing a notable shift in corporate culture that often prioritizes work over personal celebrations. Chakraborty announced this new policy in a LinkedIn post, clarifying that both days will be considered holidays, ensuring employees’ leave balances remain unaffected.
In his post, Chakraborty recounted an experience from early in his career when he faced disapproval from a superior for requesting a leave on his birthday. He emphasized, “If it’s someone’s birthday, they deserve a gift. Not a leave deduction and weird reactions.”
His announcement quickly gained traction online, with many praising the company’s progressive approach to work-life balance. Comments included: “That’s amazing Abhijit Chakraborty! High time now! That your team doesn’t have to hesitate for obvious things, to celebrate or feel happy about. You’re grown up now doesn’t mean you’re not excited or happy for your birthday or you can’t have plans.” Another user remarked, “Kudos Abhijit Chakraborty!” while a third added, “This is absolutely fantastic!”
