Manbhai Boricha, a resident of Savarkundla in Gujarat’s Amreli district, has become a local legend and internet sensation for his unwavering love of gold. His fascination began in childhood, inspired by his father who also wore gold and had a blacksmith’s licence in addition to farming.
A Golden Habit That Began in the 1980s
For more than 45 years, Manbhai has worn gold rings on eight of his fingers without ever removing them. He also sports a thick gold bracelet on his right wrist. His jewellery collection features designs of lions, peacocks, the ‘Om’ symbol, sun motifs, and even diamond-studded patterns.
He recalled buying his first 5-gram gold piece when gold was just Rs 2,500 per tola. “Between 1980 and 1990, I spent around Rs 1 lakh on gold jewellery,” he shared. Today, he wears close to 300 grams of gold every single day.
Gold in His Roots, and On His Fingers
Though Manbhai only studied till Class 10, his passion never dimmed. Even now, in his retired life, he remains active in land and property dealings. But gold continues to be his constant companion.
According to Manbhai, wearing gold has been a tradition in the Saurashtra region for generations. “It’s not just about looks or status. Many people here wear 100 to 500 grams of gold. It’s part of our identity,” he said.
Tradition Meets Personal Style
Saurashtra is known for its love of heavy gold jewellery, with people commonly wearing multiple rings, bracelets, and necklaces. For locals like Manbhai, gold is not just an investment, it’s a cultural expression and family tradition.
His story has won hearts on social media, where users have praised his decades-long commitment to his shimmering style.
