On Monday morning, Delhi residents experienced more than just their morning alarms when a 4.0-magnitude earthquake shook the city at 5:36 AM on February 17. The earthquake’s epicenter was near Durgabai Deshmukh College in Dhaula Kuan. The tremors were strong enough to uproot a tree that had stood for over 20 years in Jheel Park, Dhaula Kuan.
Park caretakers confirmed that the tree was toppled by the earthquake, but reported no other damage in the area. A video of the uprooted tree has been circulating online.

One of the caretakers, Mahaveer, stated, “I reported for duty at 9:00 AM today when I saw the uprooted tree. This is a 20-25-year-old tree. This must have happened due to the earthquake because there was nothing like wind or thunderstorms or anything here.” He explained that workers discovered the tree was uprooted after inspecting the park following the tremors.
Another caretaker, Janki Devi, added, “We did not find any other damage but just an uprooted tree…. The earthquake was felt around 5:30 AM; there were very strong tremors. Then it was found that the tree was uprooted due to that…”
