A Beijing museum has gone viral for serving coffee made with ground cockroaches and mealworms (Source: yhh/ schendelpest)
Coffee is one of the most experimented beverages with, but one museum in China has taken it to a whole new level. An unusual coffee attracted curious visitors at a museum in Beijing. Sprinkled on top was some ground-down cockroaches, and mixed into the drink were dried yellow mealworms.
According to The Cover, visitors describe the flavour as “burnt and slightly sour.” According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the roach coffee costs 45 yuan - about US$6 - a cup and is sold at the coffee shops of the insect museum. The report didn't cite the name of the museum. An employee said the coffee was first launched at the end of June and recently trended on the internet. “As an insect-themed museum, it seemed like a good idea to have drinks that match,” the employee added.
The museum has also concocted other unusual drinks. The drinks include beverages made with the digestive juice of a pitcher plant and the drink created as a limited edition ant drink which was only sold during Halloween. All ingredients are bought from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herb shop, the employee said, so customers can be assured of the safety of their drinks.
The cockroach powder could allegedly improve blood circulation, while the protein-laden mealworms could enhance one's immune system. According to the museum employee, the ant drink has a sour taste, but the pitcher plant coffee is just like any ordinary coffee. The majority of roach coffee drinkers are youngsters who are curious about the strange brew, although parents with children avoid it because they don't like cockroaches.
The Beijing blogger Chen Xi, at the request of his fans, tried the roach coffee. “It is not as disgusting as I thought,” he said, after drinking it quickly, eyes closed. Still, many internet users are sceptical. One commented, “I dare not drink it even if you pay me.” The coffee, though garnering mixed responses, has caused a buzz online and brought adventurous visitors to the museum.
