With rent prices soaring and living expenses increasing, finding an affordable home has become a major challenge. However, an 18-year-old woman in China, identified as Ms. Yang, has come up with an unusual way to cut costs—she has turned her workplace restroom into her home.

Choosing the Restroom Over Expensive Rent

Yang works at a furniture store in Hunan and refused to pay 800 yuan (₹9,422) for rent. Instead, she convinced her boss’s wife to let her stay in the store’s restroom. Initially, she offered to pay £21 (₹2,290) per month, but her employer only charged her £5 (₹545) to cover electricity and water. Yang preferred this arrangement over staying in the office space, which felt unsafe because it lacked a door. Before this, she had lived in her employer’s home.

Saving Money While Adapting to an Unconventional Lifestyle

Despite earning around £317 (₹34,570) per month, Yang keeps her expenses low, spending only £42 (₹4,580). This allows her to save most of her earnings. She also shares her daily life on the Chinese short-video platform Douyin, where she has gained 16,000 followers.

Making the Restroom a Livable Space

Yang has set up her space to make it as comfortable as possible. She hangs a large cloth over the stall doors for privacy and sleeps on a folding bed. A clothing rail holds her belongings, and she uses a portable hob to cook meals inside the restroom. She washes her clothes in the bathroom and dries them on the rooftop.

Balancing Work and Living Arrangements

During store hours, Yang packs away her belongings so the restroom remains accessible to employees and customers. She keeps the space meticulously clean to maintain hygiene and prevent any odors.

Focused on Long-Term Goals

Yang has been living in the restroom for a month and has no plans to move out anytime soon. She remains determined to save enough money to eventually buy a house or a car in the future.
