A Chinese man is gaining attention on social media for openly embracing his life as a “kept man,” financially supported by his Japanese wife. Known online as “Sudden Fantasy,” he has amassed an impressive 1.4 million followers on Douyin within just a month, captivating audiences with his unconventional lifestyle and candid storytelling.

Having spent eight years in Japan, he has become a subject of interest, particularly as traditional gender roles in Japan typically position men as the primary earners while women handle domestic duties. His situation challenges these norms, resonating with many.

Early Struggles

Sudden Fantasy describes himself as “an ordinary man from Beijing,” emphasizing the remarkable backing he has received from his wife, Fenghua, who hails from a wealthy Japanese family. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Fenghua’s mother has traveled to numerous international destinations.

He recounts how financial struggles initially prevented him from pursuing a relationship with Fenghua. “At one point, I was struggling just to eat,” he reveals, sharing how she came to his aid by providing food and helping with his tuition fees. After dating for two and a half years, the couple eventually got married.

Embracing a Non-Traditional Lifestyle

In an unexpected twist, he opted to leave his job and fully rely on his wife for financial support. Now, he spends his days playing video games while Fenghua handles all household responsibilities. He candidly admits that he does not assist with chores, saying, “I don’t even think about paying her back for the 260,000 yen (US$1,740) she keeps in a jar for my daily expenses; that would just make her cry.”

Through his videos, Sudden Fantasy provides insight into their life, emphasizing the significance of mutual support in a relationship. He enjoys staying in bed with Fenghua on Sundays until noon, even if he wakes up earlier, ensuring she feels comfortable and unhurried about her late start to the day.

Although he may not contribute financially or to household chores, Sudden Fantasy believes that his role as a ‘kept man’ focuses on enhancing each other’s lives. He even allows Fenghua to use the bathroom first to avoid stepping on a damp floor, showcasing his commitment to maintaining harmony in their home.
