Toxic workplace culture is a reality for many employees, with numerous instances of managers and bosses yelling at their staff frequently drawing attention online. Amid these challenges, a post by a woman from Chennai has recently gained popularity. She shared how she cleverly handled her previous company’s founder, who often yelled at her.
Akshita, a social media user, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the creative strategy she used to avoid trouble at her former workplace. In her post, she explained that her boss frequently yelled at everyone in Hindi.
Taking advantage of the language difference, since she was from Chennai, Akshita politely told her boss that she wasn’t proficient in Hindi and couldn’t understand what he was saying.
Akshita shared, “The founder of the previous company I worked for used to yell at everybody in Hindi. So I told them I didn’t know Hindi cause I’m from Chennai (Tamilian).” She further explained how this language barrier spared her from much of the humiliation, adding, “So they had to switch to English to yell at me each time and I got yelled at way lesser than other folks because of this.”
Her post quickly gained traction, receiving lakhs of likes and numerous comments. One user responded, “I do this every day. I patiently wait for people to completely explain the requirements. Once they finish, I tell them I don’t understand their language and they’ll have to repeat it in English.”
Another person questioned her, asking, “You had no problem with the yelling, only the language?” To this, Akshita replied that she left her job after seven months due to her boss’s toxic behavior. Her post was also praised by some, with one commenter calling it, “The lesser-known language defence 101.”
