Chennai Man Slams Zomato For Charging Rs. 185 More Than Restaurant, Backfires

A man expressed his frustration on X after discovering that Zomato’s delivery service charges more for the same food compared to a restaurant. His post gained some support, but many defended Zomato, arguing that the company, not being a charity, needs to charge for its services to remain operational. Others noted that the extra cost is justified for the convenience of having food delivered to one’s home.

User Kannan shared his experience, stating, “My uncle ordered food from Murugan Idly Shop. See the price difference between Zomato and actual.” He included a photo showing a bill from the Chennai-based restaurant and Zomato’s price. The Zomato charge was Rs. 987.65, while the restaurant’s price was Rs. 803.

The post, which has garnered over three million views, has sparked a range of reactions. Some users shared their negative experiences with Zomato, while the majority supported the platform, arguing that the charges are necessary for the company to remain profitable and cover operational costs.

Reactions to the Post on Zomato

One X user commented, “Swiggy/Zomato is not an NGO. They need a minimum 20% profit.” Another added, “The difference is you sitting at your dining table and having the masala dosa without moving your body. For that, Murugan Idly or any restaurant won’t bear the expenses, Kannan.”

A third user pointed out, “The company has to earn. The driver has to be paid. The motorcycle burns fuel. Sir, there are no free lunches.”

Another user posted humorously, “This is weird! It should be free of cost, and the riders should give head massages to the customers as well. What kind of NGO is this, Zomato?”

A fifth user mentioned, “I do not think it’s too much of a difference for convenience. If the restaurant has free delivery, you can order from them.”

Earlier, a Bengaluru resident also voiced his dissatisfaction with Zomato’s delivery fees on X.

“Zomato decreasing the distance for free delivery to 7 km and now increasing the platform fee to Rs. 6 per order has done wonders for both my health and wallet,” wrote Sumukh Rao.

“I used to order food rather frequently, but absolutely nothing from the past two weeks. Thanks, Zomato!” he added.
