What was meant to be the happiest day for two families ended in unbearable tragedy in Jamkhandi town of Karnataka’s Bagalkot district on Saturday, May 17. A newlywed couple had barely begun their married life when the groom collapsed and died from a suspected heart attack, just 15 minutes after tying the mangalsutra around his bride’s neck.

The groom, 26-year-old Praveen Kurne from Kumbarehalli village, had just married a young woman from Parthanahalli in Athani taluk of Belagavi district. The bride was also his maternal uncle’s daughter. The marriage was held at the Nandikeshwar Kalyana Mantapa, a popular venue in Jamkhandi.

From Sacred Vows to Sudden Silence

The ceremony had proceeded with joy and tradition, with friends and family present in large numbers. After the ritual of tying the mangalsutra, the newlyweds stood on stage for Aartakshate a custom where guests bless the couple with turmeric and rice. Only a few photos had been taken when Praveen suddenly began to shiver and complained of chest pain. Within moments, he collapsed on stage.

Bride Becomes Widow Within Minutes

The emotional devastation was unimaginable. The bride, who had been dreaming of a new life, became a widow within minutes of her marriage. Guests stood in shock as the decorations were taken down and the celebratory meal was canceled. “This should never happen to anyone. We came to wish the couple a long, happy life together, but we’re now forced to take part in a funeral,” said one teary-eyed guest.

Community in Mourning

Praveen, the elder son of Karnataka Cycling Association State Secretary Shreeshail Kurne, had been working at a private bank and living in Jamkhandi. The wedding was meant to be a grand celebration, with guests traveling from various places. Instead, they found themselves preparing for his last rites.

The incident has left both families and the entire community in deep mourning. The bride remains in shock, grappling with the unbearable reality of losing her husband mere moments after becoming his wife.
