BJP Minister Calls Army Colonel Sofia ‘Terrorist’s Sister’: How Much Jail Time Can He Get? | WATCH

Madhya Pradesh BJP minister Vijay Shah is facing legal trouble after allegedly calling Colonel Sofia Qureshi, a decorated Indian Army officer, a “sister of terrorists.” The remark, made in the wake of India’s successful Operation Sindoor, has now led to a case being registered against him on the orders of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Colonel Sofia Qureshi was among the two female officers who regularly updated the nation during Operation Sindoor, which India launched in retaliation to the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The operation lasted several days, ending only after Pakistan proposed a ceasefire on May 10.

FIR Registered Under Multiple Sections

Following Shah’s remarks, legal proceedings were initiated under multiple serious provisions of Indian law. The police registered the case under Section 152 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to acts that pose a threat to the sovereignty, unity, or integrity of India.

Additionally, two sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been invoked:

  • Section 196(1)(B): This deals with inciting violence or promoting enmity on the basis of religion, caste, or language.

  • Section 197(1)(C): This relates to actions or statements that harm national unity.

Possible Punishment If Convicted

If found guilty under Section 152, Shah could face a prison sentence of up to seven years. The other BNS sections carry a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment and a fine. Combined, these charges mean the BJP minister could potentially be sentenced to a total of up to seven years behind bars.

The case has stirred a political and public debate about accountability in public speech, especially when it involves national security and the armed forces.
