Vikramjit Singh, the prodigious twenty-year-old cricketer, has become a sensation in the cricketing world with his exceptional talent and remarkable achievements. His meteoric rise has captivated fans and experts alike, as he establishes himself as one of the youngest debutants in international cricket. With his composed demeanor and powerful batting style, Singh’s journey in the sport began at a tender age and shows no signs of slowing down.
In the ongoing 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, Singh has continued to shine, showcasing his prowess with a remarkable knock of 88 runs against Zimbabwe. Throughout the tournament, he has amassed a total of 163 runs in five innings, further solidifying his reputation as a rising star in international cricket.
Singh’s love affair with cricket blossomed during his early years, catching the attention of former Netherlands captain Peter Borren when he was just 12 years old. Recognizing Singh’s innate potential, Borren took the young cricketer under his wing, guiding and nurturing his skills. Singh’s unwavering dedication and natural ability propelled him to make his debut for Netherlands A at the remarkable age of 15.
In September 2019, Singh’s remarkable progress earned him a coveted spot in the Netherlands’ Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the 2019–20 Ireland Tri-Nation Series. Displaying his talent on the international stage, Singh made his T20I debut against Scotland on September 19, 2019. His exceptional abilities impressed selectors, earning him a place in the senior squad in April 2020, alongside a select group of Dutch-based cricketers.
Continuing his ascent, Singh marked his List A debut for the Netherlands A team during their tour of Ireland in May 2021, facing the Ireland Wolves. His outstanding performances caught the eye once again, securing him a spot in the Dutch One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Scotland that same month. Singh further solidified his position in February 2022, earning selection for the Dutch ODI squad in their series against New Zealand. He made his ODI debut on March 29, 2022, representing the Netherlands against New Zealand.
Singh’s journey has not been without its challenges. Reflecting on their family’s experience, Singh’s father, Harpreet, shared their encounters with racism during their early days in the Netherlands. “Back then, there was racism. I faced a lot because of my skin color, turban, and beard,” Harpreet candidly revealed.
In an exclusive interview, Singh expressed his gratitude to his father for his unwavering support, stating, “Credit goes to my father for shaping my thinking, life, and approach during tough times.” He also revealed his admiration for opener Shubman Gill’s completeness as a cricketer and shared a close friendship with Akashdeep Gill Singh, engaging in rigorous practice sessions together in Jalandhar during the winter months.
