According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS) website, two earthquakes of magnitude 3 and 2.6 struck Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Thursday morning at 5.40 a.m. and Wednesday evening at 7.28 p.m., respectively.

According to the report, both earthquakes occurred about 5 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface. NCS is the central government’s nodal agency under the earth sciences ministry for monitoring earthquake activity in the country 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

According to reports, Uttarakhand has experienced more than a dozen earthquakes in the last year. On March 5, Uttarkashi was struck by two earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.5 and 1.8.

Last December 28, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck the Uttarkashi district. In July of last year, the same district experienced two earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.7 and 3.1.

Last year, on April 3, Uttarkashi experienced a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Tremors of magnitude 3 were felt in the Pithoragarh district on the same day.

A magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck the Chimoli district on February 17. Earlier that day, on February 12, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck Uttarkashi. On February 6, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck the Uttarkashi district.
