According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS) website, an earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter Scale struck Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Monday morning.

At 3:48 a.m., an earthquake struck Uttarkashi around 5 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. This was the state’s second earthquake in less than a day. An earthquake of magnitude 2.5 struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district at 4:41 p.m. on Sunday.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) is the nodal institution of the Earth Sciences Ministry for monitoring earthquake activity in the country 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 2.8 and 2.5 struck Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi and Bageshwar districts on August 29. This year, Uttarakhand has reported around 15 earthquakes, all of which were of modest magnitude.

Uttarakhand has seen substantial seismic activity, with the majority of the state falling under Seismic Zones IV and V. Zone II (low intensity zone), Zone III (moderate intensity zone), Zone IV (severe intensity zone), and Zone V (extremely severe intensity zone) are the four seismic zones in India.
