A devastating fire erupted in the children’s ward of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district on Friday night, claiming the lives of at least 10 children. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
Fire Breaks Out in NICU
The fire broke out around 10:45 PM in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), likely due to an electrical short circuit, according to District Magistrate (DM) Avinash Kumar. “Children in the outer part of the NICU were rescued along with some from the interior section. Prima facie, the death of 10 children has been reported,” the DM said.

Emergency services, including fire brigade units, were dispatched immediately to the scene. Senior district officials also rushed to the hospital to oversee the rescue and relief efforts.

Chief Minister Takes Action
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his grief over the tragedy and directed district officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. He also wished for their speedy recovery.
The chief minister ordered the divisional commissioner of Jhansi and the deputy inspector general of police to submit a detailed report within 12 hours. Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak, along with the principal secretary of health, were instructed to visit the site to assess the situation and oversee relief measures.
