Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky complained of frustration at the failure of response from the United States after Russia’s rejection of a complete, unconditional ceasefire offer. His comments came on Sunday after a new round of Russian aerial strikes killed two people and wounded seven others in Ukraine.
We are waiting for the United States to react – up to now, there has been no reaction,” Zelensky stated, as reported by AFP.
Russia Fires Another Round of Air Attacks
Zelensky characterized the new Russian attack as a “massive” drone and missile assault, escalating the three-year conflict. The Ukrainian president cautioned that the number of Russian air strikes is growing, which he opines highlights a lack of enough pressure on Moscow.
“The number of Russian air strikes is growing,” he noted, adding that the increase “demonstrated that pressure on Russia is still not enough.”
Unilateral Truce Rejected by Moscow
Although Ukraine accepted the unconditional ceasefire offered by the United States, Russian President Vladimir Putin refused the offer. Zelensky’s appeal for U.S. intervention occurs as Ukraine calls for greater international support to force peace and push back against ongoing Russian aggression.
Russia-Ukraine War Enters Fourth Year
The conflict, which started with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, keeps raging even with several attempts from around the globe to broker peace. Russian forces on Sunday stated they had occupied a village within Ukraine’s Sumy province—a unusual cross-border gain—but it was rubbished by the Ukrainian government as “disinformation.”
Kyiv Hit Amid Nationwide Missile Barrage
Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko reported that Russia “mounted a huge country-wide assault on Ukraine with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones,” AFP reported.
There were loud explosions in Kyiv during the night, and thick smoke was observed rising from the city by Sunday morning. The head of the military administration of Kyiv, Tymur Tkachenko, said one person was killed and three were wounded in the strikes.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the death, saying, “The body of a man who was killed in an enemy attack was found in Darnytsia district.”
Conflict Continues Despite Political Promises
While former US President Donald Trump earlier said he would end the war “within 24 hours,” the war has extended to his current tenure, now over ten weeks now. With ongoing combat, Ukraine’s leadership still appeals for strong global action to rein in Russia’s military drive.
As the conflict rages on, Zelensky’s earnest appeal for tougher U.S. action highlights Kyiv’s heightened fears over Moscow’s escalating strikes and the world community’s late reaction.
