Prince William and Princess Kate, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, marked their 14th wedding anniversary with a two-day visit to the picturesque Isle of Mull. The royal couple, who married at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011, stayed at a self-catering cottage on the island—showing support for local tourism while reconnecting with Scotland’s natural beauty and vibrant communities.
First overnight royal engagement for Kate since cancer treatment
This marks Princess Kate’s first overnight stay during an official royal engagement since she began her cancer treatment, making the visit especially meaningful. Locals and tourists gathered in Tobermory, where the couple were warmly welcomed by more than 2,000 people. One particularly emotional moment came when a cancer survivor from West Yorkshire greeted Kate, who graciously acknowledged his kind words and support.
Hands-on help and heartfelt conversations
William and Kate toured Aros Hall, a community hub receiving grants from the Royal Foundation, and got involved in refurbishing the space. From wielding a nail gun to painting murals, the couple rolled up their sleeves—Kate even mentioned receiving a chainsaw as a Christmas gift, showing her enthusiasm for hands-on work.
During their visit to Tobermory Producers Market, they sampled local produce and connected with artisans. Later, they joined a local croft owner to prepare a community feast, cooking charred haggis dumplings and learning about sustainable farming. Children from Ulva Primary School were also invited to share the meal.
A return to a cherished memory
The couple reminisced about their earlier visit to Tobermory in 2003 during their university days at St Andrews. “We had a lovely time here – it’s wonderful,” said Prince William.
The trip also included a ferry ride to Iona, and a stop at Pennyghael Community Hall, where further renovations will be funded by the Royal Foundation. Interior designer Banjo Beale, known from BBC’s Designing The Hebrides, will lead the restoration work to reflect Mull’s culture and resilience.
A royal anniversary rooted in purpose and community
While quieter than their lavish wedding day 14 years ago, this anniversary was rich with connection, community spirit, and compassion—values the royal couple continue to champion through their foundation and public engagements.
