Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President JD Vance, will make a visit to Greenland on Thursday while President Donald Trump remains a vocal supporter of US annexation of the semi-autonomous Danish region.

Vance will head an American delegation on a tour of historical landmarks, delve into the cultural heritage of Greenland, and witness the national dogsled race, a White House statement said. The delegation will return to the United States on March 29.

As part of the trip, White House national security adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright will visit a US military base in Greenland, a US official said. The White House has yet to provide further comments on the trip.

Since resuming office on January 20, Trump has continually advocated for the annexation of Greenland, highlighting its strategic value and enormous mineral resources. The Arctic island is situated along a vital route between Europe and North America and is important to the US ballistic missile warning system.

Both Denmark and Greenland have strongly been against US annexation, however. The Greenland government, in flux after a March 11 general election won by a party leaning towards eventual independence from Denmark, has made no comment on the visit.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the US delegation, saying, “This is something we take seriously.” She made it clear that Denmark was willing to cooperate with the US but maintained that cooperation would have to honor “the fundamental rules of sovereignty.”

Frederiksen stressed that talks about Greenland would be held in close consultation between the Danish government and future leaders of Greenland, affirming Denmark’s position against any US unilateral move.
