US Woman Bids Farewell to Amputated Arm after Cancer Battle

Eldiara Doucette is a 22-year-old US social media influencer who has just held an emotional funeral for her amputated right arm. Diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that annually affects approximately 1,000 people, she had undergone chemotherapy, radiation, and several surgeries. Still, the cancer relapsed three times, which made her lose her right arm from below the elbow last October.

Known online as ‘Bionic Barbie’, Doucette has gained more than 510,000 followers by openly sharing her journey. Before her surgery, she wrote messages of gratitude on her limb, recognizing its role in her life. To commemorate this major transition, she organized a symbolic farewell ceremony.

On January 15, she put on black clothes with a veil, and along with family members and friends, paid homage to the limb. The embalmed arm covered with a gray blanket had nails painted black, with a red flower at the wrist. It made her smile a little bittersweetly as she began to well up with tears while approaching it.

Thinking back, it gave her the privilege of holding hands, comforting others, playing some instruments such as the piano and guitar, and even saving tiny creatures.During the ceremony, she quipped, “I often joked that my arm tried to kill me, but standing there, I realized it was also a victim of my illness. It made the ultimate sacrifice for me.”

Embracing her future with resilience, Doucette said, “You cannot control what has happened or what might happen.” She is now preparing for a metal rod implant that will allow her to use a robotic prosthetic, further reinforcing her “Bionic Barbie” persona.

The unusual rite has also caught fire on video, with more than 4.4 million likes and numerous comments stating their support for it. A commentator referred to it as “a profoundly iconic display of art,” while another one just said, “That arm looks aged; it supported you for so long. I’m glad you gave it a proper send-off.”.
