A Virginia resident’s minor frustration turned into an incredible stroke of luck when she won a $2 million (Rs. 17.32 crore) jackpot, all because of a mix-up at the counter.
Kelly Lindsay of Carrollton went to buy a particular scratch-off ticket at a local store but was given a Money Blitz scratch-off by the cashier instead. At first irritated by the error, she chose to scratch off the ticket in the parking lot—only to find out that she had just won the jackpot.
The frustration melted away in the blink of an eye as Lindsay absorbed her life-altering victory. Reflecting on the surprise result, she laughed, “And I got over not being happy about it.”
Rather than taking the award in annuity form, Lindsay took a lump sum of $1.25 million after taxes.
It’s no easy feat to win the grand prize in Money Blitz—the odds are one in 1,142,400, The Metro reports. There are two top prizes in the game, so another lucky winner might still come forward for the second jackpot. In the meantime, the odds of winning any prize in this scratch-off are one in 3.29.
Lindsay purchased her winning ticket at the Race Way Carrollton gas station on Carrollton Boulevard. In addition to changing her own life, her win indirectly benefits education funding. Isle of Wight County, where she lives, received more than $3.7 million (£2.9 million) last year from the Virginia Lottery to fund kindergarten through 12th-grade education.
She then was spotted grinning from ear to ear after posing with her giant cheque and a photo of her winning lucky scratch-off ticket—a testament to the fact that the greatest surprises usually come in the most unforeseen moments.
