On January 15, a group of fifteen lawmakers led by congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi along with five Indian –American lawmakers Bera, Jayapal, Khanna, Thanedar, and Subramanyam introduced a resolution in the house of US representative designating January as Tamil language after the commencement of Pongal One of the major harvesting festival of Indian farmers.
Tamil is one of the oldest speaking language in India with a beautiful history in Indian culture with is rich and vibrant significances. More than 80 million people worldwide, including 360,000 Americans speaks Tamil.
This initiative was co-sponsored by several other including Nicole Malliotakis, IIhan Omar, Yevette Clark, Sara Jacob, Debroah Ross, Danny Davis and Summmer Lee. People of equality and relief in Lanka appreciated the leadership of congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi for spearheading the efforts to designated January and heritage month and urge the U.S congress to pass this resolution with all due speed.
“As a Tamil-American, I am proud to introduce this bipartisan resolution honoring the Tamil language, heritage and culture in the US and around the world,” Krishnamoorthi said after introducing the bipartisan resolution”
The proposed designation of January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month in the US is more than a symbolic act; it’s a heartfelt recognition of a culture that dates back over 2,000 years. Tamil, a language known for its poetic beauty and ancient script, has become a bridge connecting Tamil Americans to their roots while contributing to the diverse tapestry of American society. The resolution not only honors the Tamil diaspora’s achievements but also celebrates their values of resilience, tradition, and global unity. It’s a celebration of humanity’s shared stories.
