The US government has come out with a stern warning to Indian students pursuing their studies in American universities, cautioning them that their student visas may be cancelled if they breach the conditions of their visa category. The advisory, posted by the US Embassy in India on X (previously Twitter), highlights the need to keep up academic enrollment and informing institutions formally in case of any changes.
In a stern notice for maintaining visa compliance, the Embassy stated, “If you withdraw, miss classes, or depart your course of study without notifying your school, your student visa can be revoked, and you will become ineligible for future US visas. Always comply with the conditions of your visa and your student status so that you do not face any problems.”
Extended Stay Might Result in Deportation and Future Entry Ban
In an earlier X post, the US Embassy again cautioned students and visa holders against overstaying their authorised stay in the country. “If you stay in the United States after your authorised period of stay, you may be deported and may be subject to a lifetime ban from visiting the United States in the future,” the notice said.
This warning comes during the overall immigration crackdown by the Trump administration, which has ramped up surveillance and enforcement of visa regulations for international nationals.
Legal Developments Provide Momentary Relief During Crackdown
The warning came after a temporary reprieve by a California federal court. US District Judge Jeffrey S White ordered a halt to the revocation of legal status for foreign students pending resolution of pending legal suits. The court order prevents the government from detaining, arresting, or moving students merely for their visa status, as per an Associated Press report.
But the judge’s ruling is conditional. Students can still be arrested for other offenses against the law. Their legal status can also be withdrawn if they are found guilty of serious crimes that carry prison time longer than one year.
Thousands of Student Visas Already Revoked
As a part of its immigration enforcement actions, the Trump administration has canceled study authorizations for nearly 4,700 foreign students with no warning. Under court depositions, Department of Homeland Security officials disclosed that holders of student visas were matched against an FBI-maintained database of suspects and arrestees. The list comprises those who were never charged or against whom charges were dismissed.
The administration’s heavy-handed approach has raised concerns among international students, many of whom fear sudden deportation or legal trouble despite adhering to academic responsibilities.
