Several major US hospitals have halted giving gender-affirming care for minors due to President Donald Trump’s executive order on January 28. He threatens the possible withdrawal of federal funding for medical institutions which dispense gender-changing treatments for under-19 citizens. In that executive order, he mandated hospital facilities to end puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgendered youngsters as well as gender-change operations.

Trump’s order says that the US will no longer fund or assist in providing gender-transition procedures for minors, labelling such procedures “destructive and life-altering.” Several major medical institutions are reviewing policies and stopping certain treatments in response to the order.

On January 30, Virginia Commonwealth University Health and Children’s Hospital of Richmond said they would put off both gender-affirming medications and surgeries in minors. They promised to continue to offer mental healthcare and support services. Also, in Washington DC, Children’s National Hospital suspended prescriptions for puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender youth but said they remain committed to providing ongoing counselling and social support.

In Colorado, Denver Health stopped performing gender-affirming surgeries for minors, citing the executive order and the risk of losing federal funding. A spokesperson expressed concern about the potential mental health impact on gender-diverse youth, mentioning an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

NYU Langone in New York and Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago are studying the impact of the order, and its ripples are being felt in the nation’s medical institutions. Most hospitals remain committed to caring for transgender youth with other health needs despite the executive order’s challenges.
