U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday morning praised India and Pakistan for reaching a ceasefire understanding after days of escalating tension over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. He warned that the situation could have led to a major loss of life.
Trump Applauds Leadership
Trump called the agreement a “historic and heroic decision.” He appreciated the courage shown by both countries in choosing peace over further conflict. “I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have led to the death and destruction of so many, and so much. Millions of good and innocent people could have died! Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions.” He shared this message on Truth Social, his platform, on Sunday morning.
Conflicting Views on How the Ceasefire Happened
On Saturday evening, Trump had claimed that both nations agreed to halt military actions after talks mediated by the United States. However, India offered a different version. Indian officials clarified that the ceasefire understanding resulted from direct talks with Pakistan, not through U.S. intervention.
Pledge to Boost Trade and Support Kashmir Peace
Trump said he plans to increase trade with both India and Pakistan. He also expressed hope for long-term peace in Kashmir, a region that has been at the heart of disputes between the two countries for decades. “I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision. While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade substantially with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done.”
The ceasefire came after four days of intense military exchange between India and Pakistan. The violence followed a terror attack in Pahalgam, which significantly raised tensions in the region.
