Trump Plans To Use 1798 Law To Deport Venezuelan Gang Members
Former President Donald Trump announced his latest immigration strategy, “Operation Aurora,” during an event in Aurora, Colorado. His plan includes using a 1798 law to deport members of the Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, and intensify border security efforts. Trump reiterated that these actions will be prioritized if he wins the 2024 presidential election.
Trump emphasized his intention to use the Alien Enemies Act, a law from 1798, to deport illegal immigrants associated with violent gangs. He highlighted his plan to deploy elite squads from ICE and Border Patrol to arrest and deport gang members like those from Tren de Aragua. According to Trump, “There won’t be a single gang member left in our country.”
He also mentioned imposing an automatic 10-year prison sentence on any deported gang member who re-enters the United States illegally.
During the event, Trump also called for the death penalty for any migrant responsible for killing an American citizen or law enforcement officer. This stance is part of his broader immigration policy, which aims to address illegal immigration with stricter measures.
Trump’s comments about Aurora being overrun by Venezuelan gangs have been debunked by local officials. Aurora’s Republican Mayor Mike Coffman stated that the incidents of gang violence were isolated to a few apartment complexes, calling the city “considerably safe.” He also invited Trump to meet with the police chief for a briefing.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running as the Democratic nominee, has responded by focusing on border security. Harris made her first visit to the US-Mexico border last month, outlining plans to prevent illegal crossings and increase prosecutions of repeat offenders. She has also accused Trump of exacerbating the immigration crisis by blocking bipartisan solutions.
Trump’s campaign message on immigration resonates strongly with his voter base, as polls show him holding a significant lead over Harris on the issue. As both candidates ramp up their campaigns, immigration will remain a central point of debate leading into the 2024 election.
