The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX subsequently requested Trump’s impeachment. This was an unusual occasion when even Democrats were left speechless. Musk’s comments gained attention quickly nationwide. They also started public questioning again of the government’s performance regarding the Epstein case.
Democrats Send Open Letter to FBI and DoJ
Not so long after Musk’s tweet, two prominent Democrats reacted. Representatives Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) and Representative Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) wrote a joint letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel. They requested immediate clarification. They wanted to know if Musk’s accusation was factual.
The lawmakers were concerned that Musk, considered a former Trump friend, could have inside information. They stated his allegations indicated that the president could be controlling what Epstein-related records are released—or not released.
What Democrats Want to Know?
In the letter, Lynch and Garcia requested five specific things. First, they requested a schedule for the release of the Epstein files. Second, they inquired about the reason why no new documents have been produced since February. Third, they demanded the complete roster of officials who participated in the declassification and review process. Fourth, they requested information about Trump’s direct role in that process. Lastly, they requested an explanation for the excessive redactions in the files previously transmitted to Congress.
Both legislators have important roles. Lynch is the interim ranking member of the House Oversight Committee. Garcia is the chair of the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets. Their investigation now provokes serious institutional doubts regarding political meddling.
White House Rejects Claims
The administration of President Trump was quick to strike back. White House spokesman Harrison Fields called the letter a political stunt. “Oversight Democrats are back at it with another fact-free stunt that has no traction in reality or fact,” Fields said.
He called Lynch and Garcia “left-wing lunatics” and claimed they were ignoring scandals of the Biden era while creating hoaxes during Trump’s first term.
Republicans Also Raise Concerns
Republicans also are critical of how the Epstein files have been handled. Earlier this year, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi released more than 100 pages related to Epstein. But the majority of the pages were redacted. That generated criticism from Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), chair of the House declassification task force. She criticized Bondi for “stonewalling” the process.
Lynch and Garcia seconded her frustrations. In their letter, they stated, “We concur with their determination that release of these documents is long overdue.” This unprecedented bipartisan accord indicates that pressure on the administration is building from both sides of the aisle.
FBI and DoJ Remain Silent—for Now
Till now, neither the FBI nor the Department of Justice has responded. But the spotlight is once again on the Epstein probe. And the questions are getting louder.
