U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House, making her the first European leader to visit since Trump rolled out his comprehensive tariff policy. Their discussion was dominated by trade, especially the U.S.-EU tariff dynamic, as Trump reaffirmed his determination to sign a new agreement with Europe.

Trump Confirms Tariff Deal with EU Is Certain
During a press conference, President Trump vowed to reporters that a tariff agreement with the European Union is imminent. “We’re doing very well, and we’re going to end up with a baseline of a really big number, which we never got anything. The United States never got anything before I arrived,” Trump declared. He went on, “There will ‘100%’ be an EU tariff deal.”
Last week, Trump imposed a 20% tariff on EU exports under his “Liberation Day” program, which put near-universal tariffs on America’s trading partners. But his administration suspended that 20% tariff for 90 days to permit time for talks.
“We pulled that down just because it was the right thing to do until we figure out what the number will be,” Trump said.
He attributed the tariff actions to boosting the economy of the U.S. “We’re taking a lot of money, which we’ve never taken before. Frankly, with Biden, we were losing a fortune on trade,” Trump claimed.
A Consolidating Coalition between Trump and Meloni
Meloni’s visit reflects her growing influence and alignment with Trump’s ideological stance. Often described as the European leader closest in ideology to Trump, she shares his views on trade and immigration. Trump and Meloni have built a rapport over several meetings, including private conversations during the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral and a visit to Mar-a-Lago.
Trump welcomed Meloni warmly, calling her “a great prime minister” and recognizing their long-standing friendship. Meloni replied that she was hopeful about trade talks. “I’m confident I can reach an agreement with Trump on tariffs,” she stated.
Meloni Serves As EU Bridge, Even Though She Speaks Only for Italy
While Meloni speaks for Italy and not the entire EU, officials are hoping that her connection with Trump may pave the way for further talks. EU leaders allegedly view her as a special medium through which to approach Trump, a person who may establish initial trust before official negotiations.
Meloni extended an invitation to Trump to come to Italy and meet with EU officials, further indicating her desire to serve as a liaison. Trump replied confidently, saying he would have “very little problem making a deal with Europe” because he has “something that everybody wants.”
Looking Ahead: Private Talks Continue
Following the public lunch, Trump and Meloni went on to a private lunch and closed-door meetings. Analysts regard this as one of the most significant interactions Trump has had with a European leader since his re-election. The temporary tariff truce offers a thin window for diplomacy, and both sides seem keen to make the most of this time.
As both leaders indicate optimism and cooperation, the international community will be closely observing to determine whether their personal chemistry translates into tangible trade progress.
