US President Donald Trump offered his congratulations to Pope Leo XIV after his record-breaking election as the leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday.
Cardinal Robert Prevost, who hails from Chicago, was elected the new pope and took the papal name Leo XIV becoming the first American to serve in the post.
President Trump showed pride in the moment, saying, “What excitement, and what a great honor for our country.” He went on to say that he was looking forward to greeting the newly elected Pope, describing it as “a very meaningful moment” in US-Vatican relations and an important milestone for American Catholics.
