Trump administration is planning a contentious move to relocate as many as one million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Libya permanently, NBC News reported on Friday. Based on five sources privy to the information, including two who are directly aware, and a former US official, NBC discovered that the plan has been discussed seriously within the administration.
The proposal would involve providing Libya billions of dollars worth of frozen American assets money that has been held back for more than a decade in return for accepting the Palestinian people. Negotiations over the idea have made it into Libyan leadership circles, marking the gravity of the notion in policy circles.
Although there has not been an official announcement, the possible relocation has ignited alarm because of its magnitude and geopolitical significance. The relocation, critics contend, would further destabilize the region and compound tensions over the Israeli-Palestinian issue. The Trump administration has not made any public statement on the report.
