Trump Expands Military Deportation Flights, Now Sending Migrants To India

A US military aircraft is reportedly sending migrants to India, marking the farthest destination yet in President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration strategy. A US official announced Monday that the C-17 plane had taken off with migrants aboard, but this flight will likely be at least 24 hours to its destination.

The use of military aircraft for deportations is part of Trump’s expanding approach to immigration enforcement, which also includes sending more troops to the US-Mexico border, using military facilities to house detained migrants, and flying migrants to various countries for deportation.

Migrant transport by the US military has earlier been done to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. The Pentagon is now boosting efforts to deport more than 5,000 individuals detained by the US authorities in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California.

The expensive military flights have not gone unnoticed. Last week, it was reported that a flight to Guatemala from the United States cost at least $4,675 per migrant, which brought into question this strategy’s costs. Critics raise questions about its efficiency and whether it is right to use military resources for deportation, especially given the high expense.

The deportation to India represents a new, though controversial chapter, in Trump’s immigration policy, greatly condemned because his administration relies too much on the use of militarized tactics to enforce immigration laws.
