US President Donald Trump has softened his stance on his controversial Gaza resettlement plan. Initially proposing that Washington take control of war-torn Gaza and relocate its over two million residents to neighboring countries, Trump now claims his plan is merely a recommendation.
Trump’s remarks come amid widespread criticism from Arab leaders, who gathered in Riyadh on Friday to discuss their own post-war reconstruction plan for Gaza.
Arab Leaders Reject Trump’s Proposal
The leaders of Jordan and Egypt have strongly opposed Trump’s plan, calling the forced displacement of Palestinians unjust. Trump acknowledged their rejection during an interview on Fox News Radio’s The Brian Kilmeade Show.
“I was a little surprised they’d say that, but they did,” Trump stated. He also pointed out that the US provides “billions of dollars a year” in aid to these countries.
“Not Forcing It, Just Recommending”
Trump emphasized that while he believes his plan is the best solution, he will not enforce it. “The way to do it is my plan. I think that’s a plan that really works, but I’m not forcing it,” he said. “I’m just gonna sit back and recommend it.”
Arab Leaders Seek Alternative Solutions
As Trump clarified his stance, Arab leaders in Riyadh continued discussions on a framework for Gaza’s post-war reconstruction. Their goal is to create a sustainable plan that does not involve forced displacement.
With global pressure mounting, the future of Gaza remains uncertain, but one thing is clear—Trump’s proposal faces strong resistance from key Middle Eastern allies.
