Tragic Air Show Crash Claims Life Of 'Top Gun' Aerobatic Instructor
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — An accomplished aerobatic pilot lost his life during a tragic incident at the Las Cruces Air and Space Expo on Sunday. Charles Thomas “Chuck” Coleman, the sole occupant of a two-seat Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 monoplane, was performing aerobatics when the plane crashed around 2:30 p.m., approximately half a mile from the airport.
Coleman was renowned in the aviation community, boasting over 10,000 hours of flight time. His extensive career included performing at numerous airshows and providing over 3,000 rides in aerobatic aircraft.
In addition to his impressive flying credentials, Coleman played a pivotal role in the making of the 2022 film “Top Gun: Maverick.” He served as an aerobatic flight instructor for the film’s actors, conducting more than 100 flights to prepare them for their roles in U.S. Navy F-18 Hornets.
Las Cruces Mayor Eric Enriquez expressed condolences, stating, “We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones and fans of Chuck Coleman.” The local community mourns the loss of a talented pilot and beloved figure.
The crash has prompted an investigation by the New Mexico State Police, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board. The Las Cruces International Airport was temporarily closed for the investigation, allowing only scheduled and emergency response flights.
