Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the devastating Pahalgam terror attack, top international leaders have stepped in to urge restraint and peace. On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held separate phone conversations with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, calling on both nations to de-escalate.
According to US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Rubio expressed his condolences for the 26 civilian lives lost in the April 22 attack in Jammu and Kashmir. He reaffirmed America’s commitment to cooperating with India in its fight against terrorism.
“Rubio also called on Pakistan to condemn the attack, and cooperate with investigation efforts,” Bruce said. She added, “He also encouraged India to work with Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and maintain peace and security in South Asia.”
Following the Pahalgam tragedy, India and Pakistan have halted multiple bilateral agreements, including the Indus Waters Treaty and the Shimla Accord. Trade between the two nations has also been suspended, as diplomatic relations worsen.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also intervened, speaking with both leaders on Tuesday. Guterres held separate conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, urging both countries to ensure justice for the victims and prevent further escalation.
UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated, “UN Secretary General spoke separately with Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan, and he also spoke with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs of India. In his phone call, the Secretary General reiterated strong condemnation of the April 22 terrorist attack that took place in Jammu and Kashmir. The Secretary General noted the importance of pursuing justice and accountability for these attacks through lawful means.”
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Dujarric added, “The Secretary General also expressed his deep concern at the rising tension between India and Pakistan, and he also underscored the need to avoid a confrontation that could result in tragic consequences. The Secretary General offered his good offices to support any de-escalation efforts.”
With global leaders weighing in, diplomatic channels remain open as the region braces for what could be a critical juncture in India-Pakistan relations.
