UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump held a call to discuss the ongoing “productive” trade talks between the two nations. According to a statement from No 10, the leaders focused on resolving trade issues, especially after Trump imposed a 10% tariff on UK goods, with a higher 25% rate on imports such as cars, steel, and aluminium.
Sir Keir emphasized his commitment to “free and open trade” and stressed the importance of protecting national interests in light of the tariffs. Meanwhile, Trump expressed his ongoing interest in resolving trade tensions while also discussing other global concerns, including the situations in Ukraine, Iran, and Yemen.
Both leaders aim to secure a mutually beneficial deal, despite the backdrop of recent tariffs. As the trade talks continue, both governments are under pressure to avoid further economic fallout, especially after the World Trade Organization predicted that global trade would shrink due to these tariffs.
Trump is also scheduled for a state visit to the UK later this year, where further trade discussions are expected to take place.
